APPENDAGESA symbol of modes of activity of the lower qualities, which functionings are hung upon the personality until it has risen above them. "The Basilidians are accustomed to give the name of appendages (or accretions) to the passions. These essences, they say, have a certain substantial existence, and are attached to the rational soul, owing to a certain turmoil and primitive confusion." – CLEMENT ALEX., Ante Nic. Lib., p. 276. The "appendages are merely modes of activity of the qualities; and the passions have to obtrude themselves so long as the functionings occur and are attached to the lower self until its limitations be outgrown. Isodorus, son of Basilides, advises man to battle with the constraints of the appendages; (and says) our duty is to show ourselves rulers over the inferior creation within us, gaining the mastery by means of our rational principle.' Ibid. The one alternative course to adopt is the suppression of the lower qualities by coercion from without the other is the conquering of the animal nature from within. |
