AUSTERITIES, PRACTISINGLimiting or restraining the outgoing activities in prescribed directions according to the Divine Law of the growth of the Soul. "All the bliss of Gods and men is declared by the sages to whom the Veda was revealed, to have austerity for its root, austerity for its middle, and austerity for its end. The pursuit of sacred knowledge is the austerity of a Brahmana, protecting the people is the austerity of a Kshatriya, the pursuit of his daily business is the austerity of a Vaisya, and service the austerity of a Sûdra." - Laws of Manu, XI. 235-6. The blissful, exalted life of Spirit and higher mind, is declared to have restraint or limitation for its source, its means, and its end. The Individuality, or spiritual mind, seeks truth from within by restraining the lower nature. The Personality, or lower mind, nurtures the qualities by restraining the desires. The Desire-nature co-ordinates the desires by restraining physical energies. The Physical-nature is subordinated to the requirements of the desires, the mind, and the higher nature. |
