BIBLE VERSES

BEASTS, WILD

Symbolic of the unruled passions of the lower nature

"Fuh-he invented nets for fishes and snares for wild beasts, in the use of which he instructed the people, for the twofold purpose of supplying their wants and procuring victims to offer in sacrifice" - KIDD China p 103

And now it is that in the scheme of the Logos an astral mechanism comes to be developed in the soul, which is to be used by the Ego in gathering the facts (fish) which it is necessary that he shall collect through sensation for his experience. The wild beasts" symbolise the baser passions, which are to be checked and so transmuted through the gradual growth of the Self within. The "people are the undeveloped instincts and activities which are to be disciplined and used; as means to the end of Self-realisation. The "supplying the wants " is realising that the powers within are to be utilised only for the highest purpose; and this is the attitude that becomes the offering up of the Self, or consecration of the lite, to the One, in return for His own sacrifice

"These (fierce wild beasts) are terrestrial dæmons, to whom the Chaldean oracle alludes, which says, 'the wild beasts of the earth shall inhabit thy vessel,' i.e. as Psellus explains it, the composite temperature of the soul" - IAMBLICHUS The Mysteries etc trans. Th. Taylor p 98

"Man begins his inward career, to use a sentence of Amiel, as a tamer of wild beasts, and these wild beasts are his passions. To cut their claws, to muzzle them, to tame them, to make of them domestic animals and servants, foaming at times, but submissive, that is personal education'" - J. BRIERLEY Studies of the Soul p 108
