BLOOD OF THE LAMB
A symbol of the Divine Life primordially involved
in the World-soul.
"These are they which come out of the great tribulation, and they
washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb." -
REV. vii. 14.
These are the souls or the qualities which arise purified out of the
suffering and discipline of the lower life. Their mental vestures of
opinion, etc. are made consistent with truth and right, and they are
now spotless and pure through the indwelling Divine Life which has
restored and perfected them.
"The blood of the Lamb is the divine truth proceeding from the
Lord." - SWEDENBORG, Apocalypse Revealed, n. 555.
"The blood of Jesus Christ cleanseth us from all sin.' But what is
the blood? It is life outpoured — outpoured in love, outpoured in
sacrifice. . . . There is a cleansing flood flowing from Immanuel's
veins that saves, heals, renews poor guilty souls. Immanuel — God
with us — God with us all the time." - R. J. CAMPBELL, Serm., The
Sense of Sin.
"Faith in Christ is that power by which the vitality of Christ,
through our love and obedience to Him, becomes our vitality. The
triumph of the believing soul is this, that he does not live by
himself; that into him is ever flowing, by a law which is both
natural and supernatural, the vitality of the Christ whom he loves
and obeys. His whole nature beats with the inflow of that divine
life. He lives, but Christ lives in him. And then add one thing
more. Christ is the perfect man, the divine man. Add this, and then
we know that his vitality filling us is the perfection of human life
filling humanity." - PHILLIPS BROOKS, Serm., The Safety and
Helpfulness of Faith.
"By this mystical blood we are saved; — this blood, whereby man is
transmuted from the material to the spiritual plane, the secret of
inward purification by means of Love. For this 'blood,' which
throughout the sacred writings is spoken of as the essential
principle of the Life,' is the spiritual Blood of the spiritual Life
— Life in its highest, intensest, and most excellent sense — not the
mere physical life understood by materialists, but the very
substantial Being, the inward Deity in man. It is by means of this
Blood of Christ only — that is by means of Divine Love only — that
we can come to the Father, and inherit the kingdom of heaven. For
when it is said that the blood of Christ cleanseth from all sin,' it
is signified that sin is impossible to him who is perfect in Love."
- The Perfect Way, p. 109.
"The Blood of Christ cleanses our consciences from dead works to
serve a living God' (HEB. ix. 14), because the 'Blood of Christ' is
the symbol, not of His death, but of His Eternal Life. The Blood, we
read, as far back as GENESIS. ix. 4, is the Life." - F. W. FARRER,
The Atonement, etc., p. 45.
"The Life of grace and truth; that is the Life of Christ, and,
therefore, the Life of God. The Life of grace — of graciousness,
love, pity, generosity, usefulness, self-sacrifice; the Life of
truth — of faithfulness, fairness, justice, the desire to impart
knowledge, and to guide men into all truth. The Life, in one word,
of charity, which is both grace and truth, both love and justice in
one Eternal Essence. That is the one Eternal Life, which must be
also the Life of God. For, as there is but one Eternal, even God, so
there is but one Eternal Life, which is the life of God and of His
Christ." - CH. KINGSLEY, Water of Life, p. 8.
