CHAOS, OR THE DEEP

A symbol of primordial formless matter. Matter in its primal state, devoid of qualities, involution of Spirit not having yet taken place.

"Orpheus declares that Chaos first existed, eternal, vast, uncreate, - it was neither darkness nor light, nor moist nor dry, nor hot nor cold, but all things intermingled." - Clementine Recognitions, Ch. XXX.

"And the earth was waste and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep; and the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters." - GENESIS. 1:2.

And the first state of matter was formless, the involution of form not having begun. All was inchoate, for spirit was not permeating or informing matter with qualities; and the Spirit of the Logos, - the Atman, - brooded upon the "waters" of ultimate reality. This statement refers to the formation in space of the invisible beginnings of the Solar system, with a correspondence also to the preparative involution of the life of the soul.
