CHEST, OR COFFER (ARCA), OF OSIRIS

A symbol of the astro-mental vehicle of the soul, in which the indwelling Self (Osiris) is confined. It may be regarded as a sheath of mental matter enveloped in astral matter, and containing the potential and latent Archetypal Man on the higher planes inward.

"After this they carried the chest away to the river side, and out to sea by the Tanaitic mouth of the Nile; which for this reason is still held in the utmost detestation by the Egyptians." - PLUTARCH, Isis and Osiris, § 13.

The sending forth to sea signifies the descent of the World-soul upon the lower planes, and its submergence in the astral tide of desire. Its passage through the Tanaitic mouth is a symbol that the Soul has ceased to be relatively at the mercy of the desire-nature, which is regarded by the educated mind (Egyptians) as abhorrent.
