CHRYSEIS, HIS DAUGHTER

A symbol of the intuition of Truth—the buddhic consciousness reflected on the higher mental plane, and bringing true knowledge to the soul.

"Apollo, enraged with the king (Agamemnon) stirred up an evil pestilence through the army, because the son of Atreus had dishonoured the priest Chryse; for he came in the swift ships of the Greeks to ransom his daughter (Chryseis), and bringing invaluable ransoms, having in his hands the fillets of far-darting Apollo on his golden sceptre." - Iliad, Bk. I.

The Higher Self working from beneath is the means of causing strife and unbalanced conditions upon the lower planes, whereby the lower qualities are destroyed. Illusion (son of Atreus) has cast a veil over the features of the spiritual mind (Chryse), for illusion overlays the astral impressions which lead to the mind and engage it. The enlightened mind is eventually to be the means of liberating the intuition of Truth; and illusion, having thus quickened the evolution, the aroused spiritual mind becomes the means of offering up gifts to the Self, that is, through buddhi, “laying up treasures in heaven.”
