CLOTHING

A symbol of limitations of thought which envelop the ego on the mental plane in forms of truth or error. They consist of ideas, opinions, prejudices, conventions, habits, theories, etc. In a higher sense the symbol stands for spiritual faculties on the buddhic plane, with which the ego may be endowed.


"A man is impious and damned who lets fall a scrap of clothing on a dead body." - Vendidad, V.


That is because the clothing corresponds to that which would preserve and perpetuate the personality (corpse) which has to be discarded and not cherished.


"My soul shall be joyful in my God, for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness." - Is. lxi. 10.


This refers to the perfected soul united to Christ and endowed with the faculties of Love and Wisdom.
