COWS' URINE DRINKINGA symbol of the drinking of the cup of bitterness and sorrow, which yields experience and wisdom. The operation of buddhi on the lower planes produces pain and sorrow to the lower self, but joy and liberty to the higher : because thereby the Self is vivified and proportionately released from the bonds of matter. Of Wisdom, it is said:- "For at first she will walk with him by crooked ways, and bring fear and dread upon him, and torment him with her discipline, until she may trust his soul, and try him by her laws. Then will she return the straight way unto him, and comfort him, and show him her secrets. But if he go wrong, she will forsake him, and give him over to his own ruin." - ECCLESIASTICUS, iv. 17-19. Suffering is the ancient law of love; there is no quest without pain, there is no lover who is not also a martyr.
