DAVID, SON OFA symbol of the mind in its lower evolutional aspect, or a state of the lower mind. "A Canaanitish woman came out from those borders, and cried saying, Have mercy on me. O Lord, thou son of David; my daughter is grievously vexed with a devil. But he answered her not a word. And his disciples came and besought him saying, Send her away." - MATTHEW xv. 22, 23. So long as Christ is appealed to as mind (man),- -as a son of David,"- the lower emotion-nature (the woman) is addressing Him from the lowest state. It is therefore really no appeal, and no answer to the prayer can be given. The qualities (disciples) do not relish the use to which they were to be put in order to allow of the gracious act of the Christ afterwards taking place. “Jesus requires faith of the blind men (MATTHEW ix. 27), that he may thereby raise their thoughts higher; they had called Him the son of David, therefore He instructs them that they should think higher things of Him. Thus He does not say to them, Believe ye that I can ask the Father? but, Believe ye that I am able to do this? They say unto Him, Yea, Lord. They call Him no more son of David, but exalt Him higher, and confess His dominion. Then He lays His hand upon them." - ST. CHRYSOSTOM. |
