EARTH, THE GREAT SUSTAINING MOTHER
A symbol of the productive buddhic nature as the
Divine expression upon the astral and physical planes. Buddhi acting
as the moulder of forms and guide of the separated Self to enable it
to manifest its true nature in the soul.
“I praise the earth, the wide‑stretched, the traversable, the vast,
the unbounded, thy mother, O righteous Homa!” — *Homa Yasht.*
The “earth” here signifies the buddhic principle in consciousness,
which is the means of assisting the gestation of the Self in the
lower nature. The buddhic consciousness is specially made mention
of, as it is from this aspect that the growth of the lower Self is
assisted.
“Aditi is this earth, for this earth gives everything here: the
all‑containing, for on this earth everything is contained.” — *Śatapatha
Brāhmaṇa*, VII. 4, 2, 7.
“Earth‑Mother of the Gods, the wife of the starry Heaven.” — HOMER,
*Hymn*, 30, 17.
“By earth is meant the Lord’s church in the heavens and on the
earths; the church, wherever it may be, is the Lord’s kingdom.” —
