EARTHQUAKES
Emblem of upheaval in the lower nature, in which
disruptive forces break up conditions that are outlived, and which
are no longer of use in the old forms.
"For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom:
and there shall be famines and earthquakes in divers places." -
MATT. xxiv. 7.
This represents the conflicts between groups of the lower qualities,
resulting in certain processes whereby the evolution of good is
ultimately accomplished. The shaking of the lower planes
(earthquakes) answers to an increase of spiritual energy above.
Vibrations communicated to the higher planes set up counter quivers
on high levels which react upon the matter beneath.
"Earthquakes signify changes of state in the church, because the
earth signifies the church, and because in the spiritual world, when
the state of the church is perverted anywhere, and there is a
change, an earthquake takes place." - SWEDENBORG, Apocalypse
