FOOD AS GOD, BRAHMAN, VISHNU, JESUS, HORUS, RÅ, CHRIST

A symbol of the Divine Reality the Source and sustainer of all things. In other words, the Higher Self, Atma-buddhi,-Love and Wisdom, -God and the "food of the Gods."

"They who worship food as Brahman obtain all food. For food is the oldest of all beings, and therefore it is called panacea. From food all creatures are produced; by food, when born, they grow." - Tait. Upanishad, II. 2.

They who aspire towards the Highest obtain spiritual sustenance, for the life-giving Spirit is the eternal source of all beings, and is the healer of all deficiencies. From the Spirit come all qualities: and by spiritual sustenance, when they arise in the lower nature, they develop.

"I am the divine Soul of Rā proceeding from the god Nu; that divine Soul which is God. I am the creator of the divine food, and that which is an abomination unto me is sin whereon I look not. I proclaim right and truth, and I live therein. I am the divine food which is not corrupted in my name of Soul." - BUDge, Book of the Dead, Ch. LXXXV.

The Higher Self, or Soul, proceeds from the Divine Power of the universe, the supreme Source which is the Absolute,-the "Father of the Gods." The Higher Self is the manifesting Spirit sustaining all things. The imperfections below are due to the fact of the Self not being fully manifest in the human soul, but the deficiencies, being negative, are illusive and unreal. The Higher Self stands for right and truth and lives in the soul as an Ideal. The spiritual sustenance is of the higher nature of the Soul and not of the corruptible lower.

“Food, from an early date, was taken as a symbol of God Almighty, rice and milk and barley, and the intoxicating soma." - A. LILLIE, Budd. in Christendom, p. 307.

"This food is the body of the blessed Vishnu, called Visvabhrit (all sustaining)." - Mait. Upanishad, VI. 13.

"Jesus took bread, and blessed, and brake it; and he gave to the disciples and said, Take, eat; this is my body." - MATTHEW xxvi. 26.

"Battista Vernazza's 'impression of eating God, and of inviting all others to the same Divine food' is substantially identical with Catherine's doctrine as to the One Bread God' and' all creatures hungering for this One Bread.' Battista's sight of God being diffused throughout human nature is analogous to Catherine's teaching as to no creature existing that does not, in some measure, participate in His goodness." - F. VON HUGEL, Mystical Element of Religion, Vol. I. p. 352.

“Food is Pragâpati." - Prasna Upanishad, I. 14.

"I heard Thy voice from on high crying unto me, I am the Food of the full-grown grow, and then thou shalt feed on Me. Nor shalt thou change Me into thy substance as thou changest the food of thy flesh, but thou shalt be changed into Mine.'" - AUGUSTINE, Confessions, Bk. VII. 10.

'Christ will come into us, not merely stand without us. He will come in and be Himself the power which lays hold of His own invitations. We may feed on Him. Nay, let us take His own strong word and say, 'He that eateth Me, the same shall live by Me.' That is the inner life, Christ is the soul rising up and laying hold of the infinite possibilities which redemption has prepared. To feed on Christ, then, is to get His strength into us to be our strength. But what is this strength of Christ that comes to us? There can be only one answer. It is His character. There is no strength that is communicable except in character. It is the moral qualities of His nature that are to enter into us and be ours because we are His. He that eateth my flesh and drinketh my blood dwelleth in me and I in him.' This is the bread that came down from heaven.' 'He that eateth of this bread shall live for ever." - PHILLIPS BROOKS, Serm., Christ the Food of Man.

"Horus is both divine food and the sacrifice. Horus hath passed on to gather together the members of his divine father; Horus is his deliverer." - BUDGE, Book of the Dead, p. 258.

"Now ye are the body of Christ, and severally members thereof." - 1 COR. xii. 27.

"There is an ancient Babylonian name Lugal-kurum-zigum, 'the King is heavenly food.'" - A. JEREMIAS, The Old Test., etc., Vol. I. p. 215.
