GABBATHA, THE PAVEMENT

A symbol of a careless general state of mind towards spiritual things.

"When Pilate therefore heard these words, he brought Jesus out, and sat down on the judgment-seat at a place called The Pavement, but in Hebrew, Gabbatha." JOHN xix. 13.

"Pilate represents a mental state wavering between allegiance to the higher or the lower, but falling in with prevalent opinion. His sitting down to judgment signifies his acquiescence in the general attitude taken by the mental qualities and constitution,—an easy-going spirit widely spread."
