GOATSA symbol of lower qualities—the desires instincts and passions "And he shall separate the nations one from another as the shepherd separateth the sheep from the goats and he shall set the sheep on his right hand but the goats on the left" - MATTHEW xxv 32 33 At the end of the cycle judgment will be passed upon the qualities of the soul The groups of qualities nations which belong to the higher nature will inherit the kingdom that is enter upon activity on the buddhic plane of consciousness while the groups of lower qualities will be deprived of activity and cast out for dissolution Higher qualities minister to the Christ within the soul in their work of raising those qualities below them though they may seem in so doing to turn away from the Christ But the lower qualities are incapable of understanding the higher or giving sustenance to the germs of goodness and truth which the Christ implants in the lower nature The lower qualities are left to be reabsorbed in the purifying fire of the buddhic plane "But suppose we leave souls out of account for the moment and think only of spiritual qualities I admit that these can only exist in the experience of souls but it is these which constitute the sheep and the goats and not the souls Souls can be freed from them or acquire them as the case may be can accept them or reject them as time goes on but there is no necessary eternal association of a soul with any quality Once we see this the parable becomes luminous The sheep are the good things in our nature the Christlike qualities in our character and experience the goats are the opposite" - R J CAMPBELL Serm The Eternal Fire This sermon was published in the Christian Commonwealth for June 18 1913 As it contains probably the first published reference to the very important idea of soul qualities being meant in scripture instead of souls in many cases it is memorable |
