GOLGOTHA, THE PLACE OF A SKULL

A symbol of the emptiness of the lower affections if they are taken as an end in themselves, rather than as a means to an end. The empty skull is significant of the vanity of all earthly attachments. The procession of Jesus and the people to Golgotha is typical of the soul which has not yet entirely parted from those lower affections which are attached to the outer form and not to the spirit within.
