KHABIT, OR SHADOW

A symbol of the causal-body which develops by means of the aspirations and experiences of the lower self.

"The Khabit seems to have been nourished by the offerings which were made in the tomb of the person to whom it belonged. In Ch. XCII the deceased is made to say, 'O keep not captive my soul, O keep not ward over my Shadow, but let a way be opened for my soul and for my Shadow, and let them see the Great God in the shrine on the day of the judgment of souls.' - BUDGE, Book of the Dead, Vol. I. p. lxi.

The functioning of the personality on the lower planes (tomb of the person) is to provide, through aspiration and sacrifice, goodness and truth, the "bread of heaven" for the nourishment and building up, by love, of the causal-body in the higher mind. When this is perfected then the union of the Soul with the Self (Great God) will be accomplished at the close of the cycle.

To be religious we must be like God, that to be like Him we must love Him, and that to love Him we must be sure that He loves us. And is it not true that faith must precede our love to God, and affords the only possible basis on which that can be built? How can we love Him so long as we are in doubt of His heart, or misconceive His character, as if it were only Power and Wisdom, or awful Severity? Men cannot love an unseen person at all without some very special token of his personal affection for them. . . . Our love is secondary, His is primary; ours is reflection, His the original beam; ours is echo, His the mother-tone. Heaven must bend to earth, before earth can rise to heaven.
