KHWAN, THE GREAT FISHA symbol of the cycle of Involution originating in the ocean of Reality in which it has its being. "In the bare and barren north there is the dark and vast ocean,-the Pool of Heaven. In it there is a Fish, several thousand lî in breadth, while no one knows its length. Its name is the Khwăn. There is also a Bird named the Phang (into which the Fish changes)." - Writings of Kwang-tze, Bk. I. Pt. I. 3. From the chaos there forthpours the "water" of the primeval Reality (Northern Pool of Heaven), in which the cycle of Involution has actuality. The content of the cycle is stupendous, and its length is unmeasured. After its termination there arises from it a new cycle, that of Evolution in which the Spirit ascends (bird) from matter and culminates ultimately in the Divine Reality (Southern Pool of Heaven). |
