MAN CRAWLED LIKE A WORMSymbolic of the condition of animal man before the advent within him of mind which raised him above the lower forms of life The angels exhorted each saying Let us make man in our image and likeness He was accordingly formed yet was unable to stand erect through the inability of the angels to convey to him that power but he wriggled like a worm Then the Power from above taking pity upon him since he was made after His likeness sent forth a spark of life which gave man an erect posture compacted his joints and made him Saturninus Irenæus Against live Heresies Book I 24 Man was first of all the production of those elemental forces or builders of forms which worked along the astral and physical planes whereon evolution was proceeding These could not give mind to the animal natures of instinct and desire whose forms they built The period however arrived when the brute human must needs become the God human And hence the Divine Archetypal Man in the heavens created of God descended upon the lower planes and assumed that human form which was now fashioned into a fitting receptacle for his Divine nature to manifest therein So it was even that God became man and so it is also that man may be said to become God for wherein differeth the one from the other when each is united in Christ Raising man by a spark of life is the hinting at the supreme truth that the spiritually erect posture of man which is related with his polarisation in the universe bears a vital connection with the assumption of Godhood The angels or nature elementals could not give man Divine attributes which before they were conferred upon him he lacked so that he crawled upon the earth Then it was that the soul was acquired or rather that the individuated unit was incarnated in a fitting vehicle so that at last a living soul made in the image of God and adapted to live in the true sense was evolved Now we should consider that God gave the sovereign part of the human soul to be the divinity of each one which raises us from earth to our kindred which is in heaven And this is most true for the divine power suspended the head and root of us from that place where the generation of the soul first began and thus made erect the whole body He therefore who is always occupied with the cravings of desire and ambition and is eagerly striving after them must have all his opinions mortal and as far as man can be must be all of him mortal because he cherished his mortal part But he who has been in earnest in the love of knowledge and true wisdom must of necessity as far as human nature is capable of attaining immortality be all immortal Plato Timaeus Jowett Vol III p 674 In one view it may be rightly said that the whole object of God in our training is to develop in us a character of eternal uprightness developing also in that manner as a necessary consequence grand possibilities of social order and wellbeing H Bushnell Nature etc p 152 |
