MAN WITHOUT WOMANA symbol of mind subject to desire and uninfluenced by emotion woman Man by himself must not carry a corpse or he will be defiled by the Nasu The penalty for carrying a corpse is that a man shall be placed where there is least water and fewest plants and on ground least passed over by flocks and herds Vendidad III Sacred Books of the East The carrying of a corpse by one man alone signifies the attempt to allow the intellect man to function alone in the personality corpse Mind acting without emotion without love is calculated to defile a soul for it becomes captive to desire Nasu and the consequence of such functioning would be a landing in ignorance and error that is in a state of mind where truth water and goodness plants are scarcest and there are fewest gleams of wisdom through the lack of virtues flocks and moralized emotions herds The power of man to stand between abstract truth upon the one side and the concrete facts of life upon the other comes from the coexistence in his human nature of two different powers without the possession of both of which no man possesses a complete humanity One of these powers is the power of knowing and the other is the power of loving From this it will immediately follow that the more perfectly these two constituents of human nature meet the more absolutely they are proportioned to each other and the more completely they are blended so much the more ready will the human nature be for the fulfilment of every function of humanity And if as we have seen one of the loftiest functions of humanity is to stand between the absolute truth and the worlds needs and to transmit the one in such way that it can really reach and help the other then it will also follow that the more perfectly the knowing faculty and the loving faculty meet in any man the more that mans life will become a transmitter and interpreter of truth to other men Phillips Brooks Sermons Visions and Tasks It is often asserted that emotion is modified only by emotion that reason without emotion remains a dead letter and this is certainly the case The dictates of reason therefore must be combined with love which we may call the positive norm of emotion then will reason become effective The ideal must become the object of love then will this supreme affection enthusiasm for the ideal work its effect upon the other forms Such enthusiasm cannot of course be manufactured it is something free the unforced persistent glow of love for perfection the practical interest in the ideal of reason Finally the ideal comes to us in the impressions wrought by God within the soul The mental impression in question therefore results not from any external object but from our being apprehended by our reasons own ideal or by the Divine spirit within us A Dorner Emotions Encyclopedia of Religion and Ethics |
