MANALA — THE ABODE OF THE DEAD (POHJOLA)

A symbol of the lower planes on which the lower personalities are incarnated

Manala also called Pohjola in Finnish mythology represents the region of darkness cold and inertia corresponding to the northern direction It signifies the realm of unconscious or semi-conscious existence where the soul is dominated by instinct memory and the residues of past action rather than by awakened spiritual intelligence

As an abode of the dead Manala does not denote annihilation but a condition of suspended spiritual awareness analogous to the astral and lower psychic planes In this state the personality is bound to form habit and desire until regeneration or ascent becomes possible

The association of Manala with the North reflects the symbolic direction of obscuration coldness and contraction the opposite pole of the South which signifies illumination vitality and spiritual ascent
