MANSIONS

A symbol of states of consciousness which have reference more particularly to differentiated aspects of the mind. The abnormal cases of multiple personality illustrate this idea upon a lower plane.

“In my Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you.” — JOHN xiv. 2.

In the causal‑body of the race are many diverse states of consciousness appropriate to the growth of the qualities, which have each a progressive course of their own on the mental plane. The Christ‑soul in aspiring leads the way and prepares the conditions, and returns again to harmonise the qualities.

“For, albeit one is stronger than another, one wiser than another, one more righteous than another, in my Father’s house there are many mansions; none of them shall remain outside that house, where everyone, according to his deserts, is to receive a mansion. The ‘many mansions’ point to the different grades of merit in that one eternal life.” — AUGUSTINE, *Gospel of John*, Vol. II, p. 244.

“There are in heaven many goodly homesteads, and none without a celestial ward (Prose Edda).” — MALLET, *Northern Antiquities*, p. 412.

“In a sense we are not creating anything by our sojourn in the flesh; all that we shall ever possess in the heaven of heavens exists in its fullness already; we are not making it, we have but to get up to it and possess it. ‘We have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.’ Yes, true enough, we each have our very own place in the Father’s house of many mansions, and we shall never improve on it to all eternity; it is just what it is, a seat waiting for its occupant, a home waiting for its owner. But before we can take possession of it fully and finally, we have to prove ourselves, through manifold dangers, tribulations and temptations, to be worthy of the realization of our divine sonship and our inheritance in God.” — R. J. CAMPBELL, *Divine Restitution*.
