MARRIAGE, LOWER ASPECTA symbol of union of an ego or mental quality with the lower emotions, or the mind with lower emotion. "A wise man should avoid married life as if it were a burning pit of live coals." - Dhammika-Sutta, 21. "Full of hindrances is married life, defiled by passion. How can one who dwells at home live the higher life in all its purity?" (Tevijja-Sutta, 47). - MON. WILLIAMS, Buddhism, p. 88. An ego desirous of progressing should avoid alliance with the lower emotion-nature, defiled by passion and desire. An ego who remains on the lower planes (home) cannot attain to the higher life of its home above, freed from captivity to the lower emotions. (In the above texts it is plain from the setting that "marriage must be taken in its lower sense of mind ruled by desire.) |
