PATRIARCHS OF GENESISSymbols of the successive stages of growth in the evolution of the consciousness, within which stages the several powers and virtues are developed and realised, by means of which the ego is gradually built up, until finally the “Noah,”- -or Self to be ensheathed in the causal-body (ark),—is arrived at. The lives of the patriarchs signify the periods, and their names serve to the successive effects with antecedent spiritual causes. "This fifth chapter of Genesis treateth in particular concerning the propagation of the Most Ancient Church, through successive generations, even almost to the flood. The Most Ancient Church, which was celestial, is what is called Man and a likeness of God. A second Church which was not so celestial as the former is called 'Seth.' A third, 'Enos.' A fourth, 'Canaan.' A fifth, 'Mahaleel.' A sixth, Jared.' A seventh, 'Enoch.' An eighth, Methusaleh,' etc." - SWEDENBORG, Arc. Cel. to Gen. v. "Church signifies an inner state of the soul, or the religious consciousness. |
