PHARISEES

A symbol of that state of mind which produces literalism, formalism, and dogmatism.

“There came certain Pharisees, saying to him, Get thee out, and go hence: for Herod would fain kill thee. And he said unto them, Go and say to that fox, Behold, I cast out devils and perform cures to‑day and to‑morrow, and the third day I am perfected.” — Luke xiii. 31, 32.

The literalists are afraid of the true interpretation of the facts of soul‑growth with which the Christ‑illumination provides them; and so they immediately bring forward some piece of sophistry against the truth, which the Christ within is not slow to detect and expose in its true colours. His remarks are the assertion of the Christ respecting his gradual work of soul‑purification; the “third day” being that period during which his perfectionment is accomplished. Herod the “fox” is a reference to the sense‑nature as a “hole” or “bottomless pit” in which the lower principle (Herod) dwells.
