REMISSION OF SINS

This expression signifies liberation from captivity to the lower nature through the raising of the qualities by an influx of Divine Life.

“Jesus breathed on the disciples, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost: Whose soever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them; and whose soever sins ye retain, they are retained." — John xx. 22, 23.

The disciplined qualities (disciples) “were glad," and therefore prepared for the outpouring (breathing) of the Spirit which raised them. The “remitting of sins" is the loosening from the imperfections and limitations which bind down the qualities, and from which liberation is obtained as soon as the qualities are breathed upon by the living Christ. The “retaining of sins” is the opposite course, the failing of qualities to receive the Spirit through the agency of qualities more spiritualised than themselves, and consequent retention of evil and ignorance.
