SALMON, FISH OF LOKE

A symbol of the lower self upon the astral plane submerged in the desire-nature.

"Loke considered what would be the strategem by which the Asar would endeavour to catch him as a salmon in the waterfall." — The Punishment of Loki, Prose Edda, Howitt, Literature, etc.

At this early stage of human evolution it first of all became necessary for the soul to work along the plane of desire, seeking food, shelter, safety, etc., for its physical body, so that it might maintain its existence and promote its well-being, while gathering such experience as came to it in the play of ideas and the lower emotions. The higher ideals (Asar) would in course of time capture and subjugate the desire-mind (Loke).
