YEAR OF TWELVE MONTHS

A symbol of the Cycle of manifestation which comprises the twelve stages through which growth is accomplished.

"The (visible) form of time is the year, consisting of twelve months, made up of Nimeshas (twinklings) and other measures." - Mait. Bráh. Upanishad, VI. 16, 14.

"For the thunderbolt is the year: the day is Agni, the night Soma, and what is between the two, that is Vishnu. Thus he makes the revolving year. By that year, as a thunderbolt, the gods clove the strongholds and conquered these worlds. - Sata. Bráh., III. 4, 4, 15-16.

The spiritual energy manifesting on the higher mental plane is the Life cycle itself. One period in the cycle is for the outgoing life (Agni), and another for the indrawing (night), when the lower self (Soma-moon) is active. The period between is purely spiritual (Vishnu). Thus the Supreme establishes the Cycle and its Life-waves. By that Cycle, as a means for the liberation of Divine energy, the higher qualities (gods) manifest their nature by destroying the strongholds of ignorance and evil, and overcoming the desire for the illusions of the lower planes.
