ZETES AND CALAIS, THE WINGED SONS OF BOREAS

Symbols of the will and mind, begotten of the higher mind. They are said to fly through the "air," a symbol of the mental plane.

"The table was spread for Phineus: the Harpies instantly descended on and seized the victuals. Zetes and Calais, the winged sons of Boreas, drew their swords and pursued them through the air." — Argonautic Expedition.

When the higher qualities (Argonauts) have undertaken to deliver the ego's mental discrimination (Phineus) from the astral ensnarements of desire and sense (Harpies), opportunities are offered for the soul's exercise, and the sense-nature (Harpies) rushes forth to accomplish its purpose and so appropriate knowledge (food) to itself for its own ends. Then it is that the will (Zetes) and the mind (Calais) are brought into play on behalf of the ego; the result being that they are said to pursue the senses on the plane of manas (air) — the great creator of illusion — wherein the senses are dangerous and deceitful.
