LUKE 1:5
“There was in the days of Herod, the king of
Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and
his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth.”
This is a great example of how the biblical communicates with
symbolism....
This entire verse is not a historical setup, rather it is the state
of the soul just before regeneration or enlightenment begins.
HEROD
Herod always symbolizes the false king, the carnal personality
ruling the inner kingdom.
• the lower center
• the ego‑structure
• the disorderly rule of the unregenerate
nature
“In the days of Herod” meaning that the soul is still under the
dominion of the carnal mind.
JUDEA
The inner land where the higher life is meant to arise but is
currently under the wrong ruler.
ZACHARIAS (Zechariah)
Zacharias is the aspiring mind, the priestly faculty within the soul
that represents:
• aspiration
• reverence
• the part of the mind that turns upward
• the inner priesthood
He is “of the course of Abijah”, meaning this faculty within us is
ordered, disciplined, and ready for illumination.
ELISABETH
Elisabeth is the receptive soul‑quality, the womb of
spiritual birth.
She is “of the daughters of Aaron” meaning she belongs to the inner
priestly line,
the part of the soul capable of receiving the Higher Life.
In short....
Luke 1:5 describes the soul before the birth of the new life:
- The lower nature (Herod) still rules.
- The aspiring mind (Zacharias) is active but not yet illuminated.
- The receptive soul (Elisabeth) is present but barren, not yet
fruitful.
This is the pre‑dawn of regeneration.
The Esoteric Message.....
Luke 1:5 portrays the soul still under the rule of the lower nature
or carnal mind, yet containing within it the aspiring mind and the
receptive soul‑quality through which the Higher Life will soon be
born.
